The Godfather of Contemporary A Cappella
On 31st January we were joined by a cappella pioneer Deke Sharon.
If you missed this workshop or wish to see it again have a look at the above video. Deke explored the different sounds we can create with the human voice, including imitating instruments, different approaches to warm-ups and aspects of singing that we can focus on in a cappella groups. He also explored the history of a cappella and how things may develop in the future of a cappella.
Deke is a musical pioneer of a cappella music: singer, arranger, music producer and coach to list just a few. If you have sung any popular a cappella music you will have definitely come across some of his 2000 much-loved arrangements.
Deke produced “The Sing-Off“ worldwide (USA, Netherlands, China, South Africa). This had the highest ratings of any new, unscripted television show in the US in 2009, and was the third highest rated show on NBC in 2010. In addition, Deke served as arranger, on-site music director and vocal producer for Universal’s “Pitch Perfect“, “Pitch Perfect 2“ and “Pitch Perfect 3“ starring Anna Kendrick & Rebel Wilson.
As the founder, director and arranger for the House Jacks for almost 25 years, the original “Rock Band Without Instruments,” Deke has shared the stage with countless music legends including Ray Charles, James Brown, Crosby Stills and Nash, Run DMC, The Temptations, LL Cool J and the Four Tops. He has also performed for luminaries including President Bill Clinton.
